the silent killer in your deodorant
Oooof..what a way to start an article! I see higher levels of aluminum on HTMA tests often, even in small doses its not ideal. Now, I know we cannot completely get rid of our exposure, but we sure can limit as much as we can.
Aluminum is considered a neurotoxic substance that has been found in toxic amounts the brains of Alzheimer, epilepsy, and Autism patients. Aluminum exposure is tightly related to neurodegenerative diseases that causes inflammation within the brain and your body. This can cause cognitive dysfunction destroying the blood brain barrier.
Aluminum is most commonly found in deodorant. Let’s discuss the cause of continual use of antiperspirant deodorant and its effect on our health. First! Sweating is important and we to stop trying to get our bodies to do something it was created to do.
Benefits of sweating:
Helps detox heavy metals (i.e. aluminum)
Helps rid the body of endocrine disrupting particles (i.e. plastics)
Helps your skin
Boosts your immune system
Strengthens your cardiovascular system
Improves well being and increases blood flow into your skeletal muscles
Helps reduce stress
Boosts sex drive
Supports cognitive function
Decreases estrogen dominance
Helps move calcium to bones instead of tissue
Using an antiperspirant daily will decrease not only these benefits, but according to a Pubmed article (PMID: 26922890) the daily use has been linked to breast cancer as well as other neurological diseases.
Over the years I have been an insane sweater, like embarrassingly sweaty and boy did it smell. I wore two shirts I was so sweaty in high school. For years I tried covering it up with prescription deodorant, men’s antiperspirant, multiple women’s extra strength deodorant. Nothing helped. Later on in life I’d realize the strong odor and excessive sweating was an issue that my body wasn’t performing optimally and my gut needed a little love as well as my detox pathways.
Anywho! Once I started down the path of switching over toxic products in my home, from cleaning, beauty, and skin care products, I began to realize my aluminum filled deodorant wasn’t serving me. Only hurting me. I went through my fair share of non-toxic deodorants and it has taken years to land on one that has lasted! Either the deodorants just wouldn’t help the smell or they would leave me with burning/ irritated armpits. My skin is just sensitive and I realized that any deodorants that had baking soda in it wouldn’t be the best option. So that left me on the hunt…again!
Last year I was introduced to Primally Pure’s deodorant and I read the label thinking no way this will work, especially because it has baking soda. I read about their baking soda and how it was different. There were only small amounts of baking soda to help with odor and its fortified with kaolin clay- a detoxifier as well as a non-nano zinc oxide that helps soothe irritation. So with reluctancy I gave it a shot and have been using it for over a year now!
To tell you how much of a relief it is to have a deodorant that works to combat the smell and doesn’t irritate you is an understatement. If you are someone who is still using Aluminum deodorant and wants to make the switch I urge you to! Pro-tip, there will be a bit of an adjustment period for your body as you switch things up and you’ll want to apply it more than you usually would!
